I lived in Dorchester from about the summer of 1955 to December of 1957. Joyce Bell was one of my teachers in the old school before it was torn down. Some of my classmates were Byron Walton, Gail Wheaton, Francis Partridge and Joan Noonan. I remember the first names of many more, but not the last. I have been back to Dorchester on two occasions, the last about six years ago. On one of those occasions, I was fortunate to connect with both Gail and Byron. I have always had fond memories of my time in Dorchester and would be happy to hear from anyone who remembers the times we had together. Roy

Hi, I came across this site and believe I recognize some names. We lived in Dorchester from 1960 to 1963. I have good memories of Dorchester. I am wondering if Paul LeBlanc is the guy who attended St Joseph’s at the same time I did. I agree with him – getting old “sucks”. After a life of moving many places in the world I ended up in Lafayette Louisiana, land of Acadians. the names here all originate from the Dorchester - New Brunswick / Nova Scotia area. All the best to the people of Dorchester.

Although I didn't know Mr. Halfkenny, I do remember Mr Gillespie and the Mills family,as it was said by Dave B. It's a sad time. David M your comments brought back fond memories of the 11th day in the square, very well said. I still participate in the activities to honour the veterans. I'm a drummer in the Victoria Police Pipe Band but I still see the Air Cadet band leading the parade to the square and who could forget Frank D. However I don't remember the bus service. To David Mcallister Thank you for commenting on our brother George Aubrey Halfkenny. I attended the funeral in Moncton on November 22, 2009. It was a lovely service. There was a large militry gathering as George spent several years in the military prior to retirement. His two sons are presently serving in the same corps as their father. Tim is a Major and his brother Thomas is a Warrant Officer. His infectious smile will be missed. All five of the Halfkenny boys served time in the Armed Forces at home and abroad. At present three of their sons are presently serving. David, I met you in 1990 a couple of times as we had lunch I believe in your dining establishment. David, thank you for taking the time to honour our brother. He did his bit.

Another Remembrance Day has passed and it makes one realize just how many people the village has lost. We would parade from the school to the Cenotaph...cubs, scouts, brownies, guides, church groups, IODE, ladies aux. from the Legion, air cadets, a visiting military band, and then last to take their place row upon row of veterans, and Frank Dobson always played the Last Post. And do you remember..those were the days we had bus service through Dorchester and there was always a bus scheduled for the village at 11:00 am, stopping in front of Cormiers garage right at the time of silence...Now the wreaths and crosses are put at the cenotaph early on the 11th by a couple of legion members and all of the service is at the school. The old village square is quiet now at the 11th hour. Most of the veterans are now gone.... and you would all remember the Halfkenny family...today was the funeral for George Aubrey Halfkenny...how he loved to get back to the village and meet all the old friends....a lot on names on here bring back memories....some good and others..(?)..... take care

I was doing a little researche on Dorechester to show my children where I spent my summers as a child (i lived in Dieppe)and low and behold I stumbled on this sight! I am the daughter of Heather O'brien who sadley passed on June 15th 2003 of Cancer. My grandmother is Mary Mckenzie who also passed away on September 12th 2001 also of Cancer. I have moved away since 1988 and now live in Montreal. I will never forget the great times I had there going to bible camp at the little white church close to the quick mart (i think it was run by the caissies back then) and the long walk down woodlawn to get there. And who can forget Swifts pond? I was in Dorchester in June and tried to visit some of my relatives but they do not seem to ever be there. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how my uncle Denis O'brien is doing? The last I heard he is living up on woodlawn road? I see that Lisa and Eddie Fitzpatrick visit this sight, I remember them from when I was young as Eddie was friends with my Uncle Kevin McKenzie. Can any one tell me if they have heard from Kevin McKenzie in the last 10 yrs? I visited him in Toronto about 10 years ago and he did not seem to be doing to good. I have searched for him on my frequent trips to Toronto and cannot find him. I was able to visit my uncle Jeff but no one seems to have heard from Kevin. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how i can get a hold of my cousins I have not seen in 20 years. Nathan,Travis+Chris O'brien(childen of David O'brien+ Katrina Hicks) and Sheldon and Aaron O'brien(children of Brenda Emmerson and Jack O'brien). I also remember hanging out with Krista Gee, Tyson.......?)cannot remember his last name but he lived a couple of houses away from Nathan's.Tony Knockwoodand , Tina and Elisabeth Searls many others I do not remember everyone's name it has been so long!!!!!!!! I was wondering if anyone knows anything concerning my brother Gerry Cormier's family in Memramcook? My brother passed away in a car accident in Rexton in 1988 (he spent alot of his childhood in dorchester). As he was my half brother my mother told me about his father's side of the family when I was young. They are the Cormier's. Apparently my brother was somehowe related to ''The Beast'' My brother's father was Gerald Cormier from Memramcook. Apparently he dissapeard in the late 60's early 70's and was never seen again (my dad Reg Richard) says they assume he has passed ). I remember some of the Cormier family attending my brother's viewing in 1988 at the chartersville Funeral home in Dieppe. If any one has any answers to my many questions(lol)or remembers me and wants to drop a line you can email me at jennifer.richard@bmo.com. If any one sees or knows anything about my cousins please have them contact me at the email above Thanks everyone who reads this and thank you all for making Dorechester that memorable place! I see the weather is not great here in BC it's unbelieveable for summer.Saying that the rain will start soon and we'll be back to woundering where the heat went. Best wishes to all. Does anyone out there have any old pictures of DHS and the student body from the fifties and sixties you could post on facebook. If so, please share with the rest of us, we could use a trip down memory lane. Cheers

It's great seeing the familiar names on this web site. Like you Paul, I too can remember the fairs at the race track behind the school. They were a lot of fun but I don't remember any behind the bank or the legion. It's good to see the yearly Sandpiper festival continuing, which I am sure draws lots of visitors to the town. Here's wishing everyone a great Canada Day long weekend. Hopefully the weather will also cooperate and everyone can enjoy some sunshine and warm weather.

The fair behind the Legion would have been in the early to mid 50's. I remember going with my parents and thinking it was quite an event. At that time there were still a lot of families living in Dorchester so there was a large turnout.

What year was the fair behind the Legion? I remember the one at the old track behind the high school. There were no Sandpipers in those days. I'm happy to see Dorchester is still on the map. Getting old sucks. The names are the same but the face isn't there. Hello to all

Hi Rod, I saw your post and thought I would suggest going to Don Chapman's Chignecto Home page (google it). It should help answer many of your questions on the Chapman family tree along with many other families with roots from the Dorchester area. On September 7th 2007 at 2:03 pm, Rod Chapman said... My wife and I visited the area in the fall of 2006 and thought it very beautiful. While there we were also doing some genealogy research. It appears that our Chapman roots come from Dorchester. The line so far goes to Martin Chapman b 1821 d 1892 who was married to Ruth Tingley. While I am of the opinion Martin's parent were Martin and Mary Chapman of Dorchester Island I have not found much luck in establishing this to be true. If there is anyone there who might know Martin's lineage and siblings I would appreciate knowing. Thanks.

I am the grandson of Edward Allan Turner who lived in Middleton (1868-1952). Recently the Turner (Matheson) house went up for sale and I considered putting the Turner name back on the property, but thought better of if.
In my genealogical quest I learned that the original grantee of the property was a James Derry (1765 - 1832). About 1830, James Derry traded farms with John Council Turner who was living in Harvey, Hopewell, Albert County and the Turners remained on the property 'till the Mathesons, who were my cousins – children of my father's sister – Frances (Turner) Matheson, sold it to Kevin Crossman ca. 1992.
If anyone knows who James Derry was please contact me at

Like all of you, we have fond memories of growing up, in, and in my case, raising a family in Dorchester. I would like to take this time to send condolences to the Spence family in the passing of Garfeild Spence. He was a rock, and a very kind man. How many people would have been as generous with his own space, as Garfeild was to all of us. He allowed us to have a place to meet, and share our lives, the good and the not so. And if we got a little out of hand, we knew it was time to settle down, by the way he threw our money on the counter during a purchase...lol. I remember how kind he was when we would stop by his place at Christmas, and sing some carols. He enjoyed it, and it was a blessing to sing to him, knowing he did. Now, he can hear the angels. I hope everyone is well, and I'll be checking in once in awhile, to see who has popped in lately. Take care, all!

Hi Anita I sure do remember you. Barb's girl friends meant so much to her. Carol Gallant was another one. She ended up living quite near to Carol in Ottawa by some weird chance. Anita I have a picture of you playing a duet with Barb at Mrs.Dooe's music festival. At least I think it's you. I must re-look at that. I have great photo albums of all the old times which I peruse from time to time. As I recall you played well. Thank you for mentioning my mother. She was amazing. Her Dr's thought so too. And how she loved all Barb's and Janet's friends to come and make music. Ray Olive was another. My memories are not as vivid as Janets would be. I was nearly 8 years younger than Barb so was shuffled off to bed probably being only 8. Lovely hearing from you. I must tell Frank who lives in Mississauga and works in Toronto. He is the one who put me onto this site. I was computer illiterate until I retired 2 years ago. Ha and not much better now but I can type. Where do you live now? I hope your summer is dryer than mine. ps Just as an aside did you happen to read my mothers stories in the T&T in the 2000 special addition? She won a prize for her well written stories. I really enjoyed those and Pat Buck's(Armour) too.

Alice Dewitt What are you doing on the Dorchester website? Where are you now? Great to hear from you. Are you well and happy like I am? Hope so. Frank and I buried mama's ashes on Saturday last in Dorchester. What a beautiful day it was. Dorchester was at its lovliest. Lot s of people around which was weird. More than Frank ever saw in his whole young life there.!!!! I know you remember mama. She lived to be 92 and was coherent up to the last day. Her last word was Molly. We try to look on the positive side but it does leave a hole in the Duffy family. Write again.

Wanted to say how sad I am at the passing of Pat Cormier. She was a client of mine for years and I grew close to her. Even after I cut down on my work and didn't see her as often she would keep in touch with me and be the same old Pat. She was a generous person. Always baking the lovliest goodies. Fancy cakes and fudge. No one could make divinity fudge like Pat. She was a very interesting pereson and we always had such good laughs. I'm sorry she's gone. I'll remember her as a very special gal, well liked and kind. When it's all said and done it's a good thing when someone and in her case many can say this about us. Sincere condolences to all her family.

Hi Ritchie it would have been great to see Ray (Bubsey) Goguen. Many years ago I used to hang around with Bubsey and Paul LeBlanc (Uldrich' s son) whose family lived between the Baptist church on one side and the house where Floyd Sollows lived on the other. I haven't seen either of them in years and didn't realize that Bubsey lived in B.C. That's a little ways from Dorchester and the trip back must have certainly been nostalgic for him. Talking to him must have brought back some terrific memories for both of you, as well as some stories long thought forgotten. Sounds like a great visit although parting with the old family home in some ways must have been bittersweet. Whenever I read through the guestbook, seeing many familiar names always brings back great memories of growing up in Dorchester. Any old school mates or folks I used to hang around with and want to say hello, can drop me a line at daveddb@hotmail.com Sorry for the long post. The long weekend is past, the weather hopefully will improve and the summer is yet to come. I hope everyone had a great weekend and is looking forward to a terrific summer.

Now that I am at the age of receiving OAS it brings back some great memories of how simple life was back then and there. Take care all and if you wish to reach me I am at paul5@mrs.net. Pun

My condolences to Murlin Toye's family and friends. I had the privledge of calling Murlin my friend. I met Murlin in 1991 at 30th Street depot. We worked together there and became friends. He was like an uncle, friend and big brother to my daughter Elizabeth. I will never forget the time we went on strike. No one even knew our little station existed. Murlin was on top of our building with a telescope scoping out the area so the management could not send in scab workers. The rest of us enjoyed the sun on our lawn chairs feeling safe and secure cause Mur was on the job. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand to a fellow carrier or like me, a clerk. He spent several Christmas' in my home enjoying the noise and chaos of 40 odd people and I mean odd people. I don't think he had a chance to feel lonely during those times. My daughter Elizabeth made Murlin something everyday. She coloured pictures and made plasterine figures of what she thought Murlin looked like and she would glue scraps of material together and tell him it was a mouse pad for his computer. Everytime I took her shopping she would stop me in the store and say" I think Murlin would like this, can we buy it" Murlin was talking to her a few months back and told her that he had everything she ever made or gave him. We will never forget you Mur. You will be forever in our hearts. Love always and forever Dianne Jamieson

September 11th, 2007 Remembering dear friend Murlin Toye We were advised on September 10th of the untimely passing of Murlin Toye. He will be sadly missed. Murlin Toye started working at Canada Post in 1989, as a Letter Carrier in Etobicoke. In 2002, he took on a position as an MSC Supervisor at the York Distribution Centre in the GTA. Throughout the years Murlin also worked with the Continuous Improvement Team and Parcel Model Implementation. Murlin joined the Edmonton team in May of 2005. Murlin was 43 years old. He was truly committed, as an employee, as a person and most of all a friend to many of us. We extend our thoughts and prayers to Murlin’s family during this very difficult time. Sincerely, Your friends and co-workers from the greater Toronto area.

Wow, just surfing tonight and happend to plug in "Dorcherster" a place I was born in 1965 and left in 1986. It is nice to see people have great memories of a home town. I seen soooo many names and even siblings mentions. I did revisit a few years ago. I have some great memories of some special people who still reside and call Dorchester home. I have even reconnected with a few in the past few years that have moved away and still visit. Memories never go away and some always make me laugh. We have been living a great life in Ontario and will soon be returning to N.B, Our son is starting grade 10. Time will tell, how soon we get back. Thanks.

I just wanted to say thank you to one and all on behalf of all the Savoie family for all your condolences. My condolences to the Spence family-she will be sorely missed, what a jewel. And to the Gogen family, I loved running into Mrs. Gogen, she never seemed to loose energy. There are a few of you that I was never able to express my condolences because I found out months sometimes years later that someone had died. And of course, I dare not list in case you have lost more and I don't know it. I am kind of interested in the Handrahan family. Are Mom and Dad still around? And what is going on with the rest of you? Since we were so stuck together for years (adjoining houses) we all got to know each other. I'd love to hear. Again, thanks to all for your kind condolences.

I remember being the designated driver for: Bernard Landry & Rod Richard & Harley McPhee & sometimes Gary Colwell - mostly in College Bridge/St. Joe - because I didn't drink - didn't like the taste of beer - a trait later rectified. Recall the night Mike Hicks tore up the turf on Eugene Dickie's lawn & Mike's father found out. The nite Bruce Crossman tried to move the church steps in St.Joseph with a 65 Pontiac. Ian Hamilton arguing with "Peter the Mailman"(RCMP) and losing. Beer being poured into the carpet of Sam McPhee's 67 Mustang - A REALLY nice unit - before the mountie got to us - and the fine was only $15.50! THE SIXTIES ROCKED!!

Hello Dorchester!! I moved away form Dorchester when I was 18 (over 25 years ago) I now reside in Calgary where I work as an environmental engineer. My Mom and Dad (Richard and Betty Swift) still reside there and I go home every other summer to see them whenever I can. I love Dorchester such a beautiful little town. The sights are as beautiful now as they were when I was a kid. I really miss swimming in Palmers Pond. I love this website… what a great idea! I am currently working on my MBA and it has kept me so busy I have missed out to seeing my family three summers in a row …which really sucks! However, this summer I will be coming home and I can hardly wait to get there. Lunch at the Bell Inn, long walks around Water Street, and watching the Sand Pipers….. I can hardly wait!!! I really miss the small town hospitality after being a big city person for so long you never know you may see back there one day. I recognized so many names on the website I just had to say hello. Cheers, Bonnie Swift.

The story about how we put a blockade at the top of the hill in Dorchester the night that Prince Phillip was going to Springhill due to the mine explosion. It was Halloween Night and he got out of his car and spoke to us and we took the blockade down. That's it, that's enough for now. Hope to hear from you all. Iwas just sitting here checking out the guestbook and got to thinking , it's 45 years since I graduated and left town. I'm seeing the odd name that"s familar , but it could be 2nd or even 3rd generation by now. Every so often I get the urge to reach out to my misbegotten youth and see who's still around so if anybody remembers back to the days when Dougie,Donnie, and David lived in the green house across from the Station Road drop me a line either here or at

Eric, It is very likely the Historical Society (the Keillor House) has some information on the Lady Smith Manor. You may wish to contact them at 379-6633, or contact Dianne Nicholson for more information. I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but it is definitely worth trying. Good luck on your endeavor.

Barbara Stultz. If you read this I have some more information on the house that you inquired about that burnt. The fire was August 31, 1953. The house was owned by Ellsworth Mitton and was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Mitton and their two sons , Allen and Leaman, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rogers, Carolyn, and Carl. Mr. & Mrs. Howard Sparks and daughters Denna, Sandra, and Barbara. I found the information in an old newspaper clipping which my mother had saved.

I just read through all the postings here and man is there a lot of old memories being brought up. What a marvelous little town to have grown up in! Here are some of my recollections from my childhood in dorchester-Skating on Jack Hickman's pond; swimming every day at the dam or at the railroad trestle; drilling for oil on Ilsely's farm; going for boat rides in Sonny Dobson's boat; toboggan parties on the terasses or on the hill next to our house; the Cherry Burton Ghost; camping out on Dorchester Island; picking Blueberries up the tracks; Wading in the mud at Buck's Flats; the Court House fire the night of our graduation in 1965 and for Eddie Robichaud, Rod Richard, and Paul Bourque the two week drunk at my place when my parents went to Ontario on a house hunting trip. What a wonderful place to grow up in, planning on a visit next summer.

Hi there everyone. I am looking for a Leonard Tower or someone who may be related to him. The reason I am looking for him is that I received some diaries from my grandmother. In it she quotes, "Leonard Tower has records of the Doherty's." This would probably be around the 1970's or so. I am wondering what records this Leonard has? My grandmother and grandfather were Charles and Edna (Doherty) MacFadden, who lived on York Street in Sackville, NB. The Doherty's are connected to the Towers via Mary Jane Doherty, born 1833 who married Lemuel Tower, born April 11, 1831. Mary Jane is my 2nd great great Aunt.....I think heheheheeee. Anyway hope to hear from someone.

I will never forget my very dear friends Ross and Kathy Monk Gordon and Joan Colwell Paul Vinquist the many wonderful folks at the Baptist Church. I see Bud Louis Landry often. He lives near our town. I would be happy to receive emails if there is anybody left who would remember me. I have named only a few of my special friends. Hi Barbara the house you mentioned burnt down in the late 50's. I remember going to watch the fire with my mother. I would have been about 8 years old. The fire happened early in the morning. This house had a couple of units. I believe the Sparks lived in there as well as the Greenburghs and Saunders. I believe that the Greenburgs owned the house.

Sarah Crossman was Martin Cole's mother. I see many family trees on the site but they all seem to end with Demille Buck. I have the missing branches to that tree. Would love to swap info photos names with anyone with similar interests. Currently live in Punta Gorda FL but born and raised in Massachusetts. Inherited my dad's collection of photos and mementos. My dad grew up in an area where the Buck and Cole homes were next to each other. Have a picnic photo on Dorchester Island. Relatives recently went there and took photos in the same spot my dad was with a group picnic. He was born in 1906 and was the baby in his family. He died 1992 in MA. I have some great family photos and would like to shareswap with anyone connected with Buck Cole and Crossman families. Have a great photo of Sarah Crossman and her husband Martin Cole taken 1920. Just reading through the site so nice to be reminded of people I used to know which in turn reminds me of the times we spent growing up. As John Mellencamp put it we were young and we were improving. I moved out in '72 and have been living in Fredericton for more than 30 years now. By the way the name of the restaurant that Sparkes' had beside Garfield's was the Blue Alcove I still remember when they got the neon sign with that name on it. Also remember that in addition to the booths they had this great case with a very large choice of penny candy. Hitting that when I was little was like well like a kid in a candy store. Hell that must have been around around 6263. I remember that and a few years later swimming at the dam with the Lorettes and Philip Robinson and Claude Belliveau I remember weekends drinking at the track after buying bootleg beer or Golden Nut depending on how flush we were that would be late 60s give or take. I used to live on the Back Road. More recently I attended a great high school reunion at DHS about 10 years ago wish they'll have another one. I noticed the post Henry Lorette posted where he hit manyh of the same memories I have. I need to promise myself to come back to this site. It is a fun place. Thanks to whoever is responsible for it. After reading Rick Richardsons didn't know him though comments on Dorchester I thought what a great thought. I too would like to go back and grow up there again although it would be a lot more than 35 years. I loved the place then and still love it now. I also notice that I have never read a negative comment on Dorchester from anyone in the guest book. Guess that just proves it was the best place in the world to grow up. Can't wait to get there in July.

I wrote to your website on 8th December 2005 reference Dorchester soldier JOHN F HICKMAN. I have contact with his relatives and am able to assure them that the truth of his story will come out. I have the assistance of the Coroner who now resides over the area in which JOHN died. I have actually walked through the old 1919 trenches where JOHN trained. I have been to the camp where he died and have stood at the graveside of the four men who died with him. I will be playing my pipes at their graves on November the 11th 2006. My enquiries are almost over now and the true story about to unfold. Who knows perhaps I will bring my pipes to Dorchester ............... If there are any who are interested in what happened at KINMEL PARK CAMP on the 45th March 19119 they simply HAVE TO SURF THE NET. You will find the myths the whitewash and the lies I will provide the truth later. Bill Jenkins Liverpool England.
